Preferred Oil

I have an 04 K1200GT doing first oil change (13k) any particular brand / weight of oil preferred? Did a search for oil and came back with few results. On the BMW car forums there are huge debates about which weight / brand is the best to use....

And on the forums also. Most will avoid oil threads like the plague.

Look in the owner's manual for questions on oil weight vs ambient operating temperatures.

I just switched to 15w40 out of a 5 gal bucket vs the Castrol 20w50 I have always used since 85 without any oil related problems ever on both Ks and Rs. Surprisingly noticed a slight increase in oil pressure, not a lot just 3 PSI and there may be other considerations to that. May not know until the next oil change, hopefully in a couple weeks as I just did it last weekend.

I have 115,000 miles on my bike. All I have ever used it 10w40 dino oil. All of these oil debates are silly. I change every 6,000 miles. It uses no oil yet. For a while I thought it was using oil but I was not checking it correctly. The method is to put it on the center stand after a ride and check it 20 min later.

These are essentially small car engines -

I just use the correct weight Mobil 1 and change at the end of every season, or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first.
