BMW have a habit of being OTT with tight zip ties and this is no exception around the front sub frame. Try turning the ignition and the indicator on and slowly rotate the bars from lock to lock. If you get an intermittent result, you have a damaged wire. If you still have no indicator, you probably have a broken wire, most likely attached to the sub frame behind the headlight. If you can set up a bypass wire and get a positive result you will have isolated the problem area. If you find the area at fault is in the loom, it is sometimes better to leave the loom untouched and wire in a permanent bypass.
As Vox says, it may be a dirty switch, however these switches are known to be fairly robust, the wiring is not....
