Coolant Temp Low then No

I have 2004 K1200Gt and have started to experience erratic temp gauge behavior. At first the temp read high, but did not overheat. Yesterday it read normal at first and then quit. After reading a post or 2 here I removed the tupperware, cleaned the cruddy sender wire connector, no gauge response. Will the bike continue to run well until I have time to repair properly? I have my annual 3000 mile trip which starts this Friday 7/7.

If it were me I'd try to fix it first. Starting a trip with a problem you don't completely understand is bad Karma.
