My 1998 K1200RS saved my life

You all know this bike is heavy, fast and very stable at speed. I have ridden this bike since it rolled off the showroom floor and kept it in mint condition without a scuff or scratch anywhere. Well, not exactly true thanks to a few stone chips and who doesnít scuff their saddle bags with their boot every once in a while. Best bike ever? I have not ridden that many but for me, perfect for the highways and twisty back roads. Passenger or not, this bike is powerful.

Last Friday was ride to the office day. Three of my coworkers road to work, unfortunately, I did not make it there on the bike. On a twisty back road with a decent speed limit of 45 I was lazily accelerating up third gear. Power on ready to rip and out jumps a deer... Brakes, clutch, roll off the throttle? Nope. It was a tree lined two lane road, open road, power on, DEER, BOOM! I hit that deer smack broadside at the front legs. I canít tell you exactly what happened but it was a big impact and the ass end of the deer came around, shit flying and dented my pristine muffler. The next thing I know, the bike is wobbling, pieces of the front end plastic hanging about, shattered but I was still moving and on the road. A quick flip of the throttle, yup, still running, slip the clutch (must have pulled it in) and Iíve got power. I found a safe place to park and stepped off the bike and looked back. One dead big ass deer in the road.

I am very lucky for sure but I will say that if it was not for this bike for all the reasons I said before, things could have been a lot worse. Thank you BMW for making such an awesome bike.

I hate to tell you this, but the dent in your muffler is the LEAST of your problems! Gonna take a lot of duct tape to fix that one! All joking aside, glad you're OK. As you said, could have been much worse. Now the important question: you going to try and fix the bike, or start looking for another one?

Glad to hear you're OK. Too bad it had to happen, but that kind of risk is part of what goes with the turf in NH, I guess. I think you can spin it and say that you're lucky it wasn't a moose or bear on the Kank.

Gonna have to check out the front end and frame for alignment. The fairing and its hardware is obviously toast. Time to give Joshua at Parts Haus a call if your damage is limited to the fairing. You might be able to get away from this event fairly cheap and it's still early enough in the year that your riding season won't be lost.

I too have credited the K1200RS for staying stable through a deer impact.
Mine was a roadkill in Ohio in 2014. We were riding back from Indy 500 race. I went to pass a truck on a 70 MPH two lane highway. Road weary I missed seeing the dead deer in the left lane. Decided to hold a steady course with no braking, it was too late for turning or heavy braking. Front tire went through the deer belly with a massive speed bump like hit.
When we stopped the rider behind me who witnessed it all was in more shock than I was.
I gave a similar thanks to the engineers.
