Not so hot heated grips

I am about to replace my grips as they are worn out and was curious to know if they lose their heat over time. When I bought the bike new I remember they seemed hotter than they do now. They still work fine on both settings, just not as hot as they used to be, so is this my imagination or is something amiss?

I noticed that but while wearing my winter gloves.I'd have to try again with the summer gloves.

In the meantime I cleaned the switch,the whole assembly needed attention.Switch regulates Voltage to the grips,I don't have the specs but lower voltage on Lo and full V on Hi.Whatever that full V is most probably isn't full battery Voltage from them smallish wires.

I was thinking of bypassing the OEM small wiring with a relay setup that way I'd get higher Voltage/more heat.I'll go poke at the connector in a few minutes with the meter.....might only need an update to the ground?Heated grips connector? Pretty well the last connector I need to clean and protect on my bike.

Ouch....283K (kms),I don't remember last time I checked the electricals but sure needed attention.And no more dielectric grease....dries out over time/impedes contact and causes problems.

Thanks Pierre, thatís a good place to start. I wonít get to this for a while as I donít have a workshop set up yet, and itís summer here so little use for heated grips. Havenít had this switch apart before and ironically the kill switch is playing up a bit. The switch block was a used item with heated seat switching in it so I have spare parts from the original if needed.

I'd have some preliminary results as to Voltage drop over the 20/22ga wiring used by BMW but I'll wait until my battery is fully charged.Lots of playing with the electricals recently so battery was on the low side.

Mind you....age/retirement may be a factor?I can't judge temps by hand as good as I used to.Or hold hot stuff as long as I used to.....!

BTW.....I have a complete set of controls.Everything from the pegs up to the mirrors for $100 on fleabag a few years ago.I robbed a few parts out of that including the heated grips.Lower milleage but no difference on the heat output.

Iíd be interested to know the results on voltage drop when you have them. Maybe updating the ground would do the trick given bmwís reputation with skinny wiring. Will look into it when I have the opportunity to take the switch apart.

So.....one meter at the battery.Other one at the grips connector at the harness.Headlight off.

~0.5V drop in Voltage on Hi.Pretty well the same I measured yesterday with the lowish battery.

Engine running let's say ~13.5V at the battery so the 0.5V drop is 2.7%.Not a lot and less than I measured at the headlight as I relayed and HIDed that years ago.

Meter + at the black grip connector ( + wire) and meter - at the battery negative to bypass the brown grip ground, NO significant change to the Voltage drop.So improving the ground won't have any benefits.

Too late now for me to check if cleaning that switch did in fact improve the path.And enough electricals for a while.....took me most of a day last sunday to build a harness/replace tiny 28ga with 20ga marine rated and solder tiny connectors if just to improve on the pesky OEM wiring for my oil pressure gauge.

But.....I cleaned my switches in place.Dammik....looking at the grips connector yesterday I noticed the switch loom is split down there.Now I have to open the electrical jack in the box,free the connectors and fix that properly.

Thatís a reminder to me too as my switch looms have split on both sides. Have them taped up for now to keep the moisture out but need to fix this permanently. Thanks for the voltage figures Pierre, I will concentrate on cleaning the switch block and see if this helps.

Permanent fix of the loom is done.Pull connectors out of the box.Take connector apart,that is flip lever separated from the connector.Fish 3/4" cheap shrink tube over the whole mess of previous repairs and start the heat gun.

Sorry 3/4" won't work on an 02. 3+ connectors on the R/H side and won't go through 3/4" shrink.Maybe 1" would do if you can fish the mess through?1" at 3:1 shrink ratio vs the regular 2:1?

L/H side on an 02 is two connectors.One flip type that can disassembled quickly but the other would require removing the 2(?) pins from the connector and then mess could be fished through 3/4" shrink.

But with the right cheap tool them pins are rather easy to pull from the connector housings.

Yep....my spare switches are from an 02.

My R/H switch block is from a GT as I have a GT heated seat and wired an oem heated seat control into the RS loom. As there are no connectors available on the main loom for the heating I soldered most of the necessary wiring direct to the loom. Guess I have a bigger job ahead of me to replace the casing but at least the 3/4” shrink wrap will work on both sides.

Nope.....3/4" won't work on an 02.That's for the 03 with the single multipin switch connector in the box.BMW simplified the switch harness in 03,good thing makes going in the box a lot simpler if just to replace a switch.Sure is crowded in there.....!

But this should work to remove the terminals from the housings and then you can use smaller sized shrink:

Cheap.....I have one coming soon.GT harness that I bought cheap if just for the starter relay has proven to be a little gold mine of terminals/connectors etc over the years.Snip....snip!
