How to remove the steering stem cap

I've seen a number of posts where people pop the steering stem post off and mount a RAM ball in there. MV Motorrad has a nice one that is supposed to go right in there. My question is, how do you pop the cover off without scratching the crap our of it? I'm talking about the cap that's directly below the ignition.

Please don't tell me there's a "special BMW tool" for this silly cap.

thanks.

On a '04GT, it is held on by nothing but an adhesive sticker. If you pry it off, it's almost flush on the triple tree. I did it last year for a thermometer, thinking it was a recess that the thermometer would sit down in. Not
