How to change a headlight bulb - '99 K1200RS
I may not have exhausted all the threads on changing headlight bulbs but I couldn't find the answer. I did follow one thread that recommended I remove the instrument skirt and then the front cowling. After a long, long time and still not getting into the headlight, (I even removed the side fairing) I put it all together and went to the dealer. "My low beam light is out and I need to replace it, can I leave the bike?" "Yes" he said looking somewhat quizzical "but if you'd like I'll have a technician come out and put one in for you?" This he did - here is the process. Looking under the front instrument panel down to the front of the bike, you will see a black plastic cover with the word TOP printed on the top of it. It is shaped and about the size of a cereal bowl. This is held in place by a wire spring clip that is about 4 to 5 inches long and it runs across the back of the bowl. Push this down and it will release the bowl, the bowl comes out with very little clearance and some slight difficulty. You have now exposed the light plugs. the upper is the low beam, the lower is the high beam. Pull the back plug off of the back of the bulb. Holding the bulb in place is a spring clip with two ends that if squeezed together and pull back slightly will release the bulb. The bulb now will pull straight out. The challenge here is you can't see any of this while you are doing it, it is all visible with your hand out of the space. The skirt of the new bulb base has a small flat protrusion that needs to be pointed up. When the bulb is in correctly you can't move it. With the bulb in place, replace the small spring clip, the bulb socket, the plastic cap with TOP up and finally swing the long spring clip up into place. This I could do on the road and it would take less than 3 minutes. If you want to see it, it'll take you about 2 hours.. sorry for the long post! If you have any questions ask!
