Looking at used RS's, Is this normal?

I went and looked at an 02 K1200RS the other day. Upon startup, the bike was blowing smoke out the back. The guy said that it goes away after warm up and the dealer said its normal. Is this true? The bike had 56k on the dash. I had a 99 K1200RS and I dont ever remeber mine doing that, EVER. Whats the deal? Was this motor on its last leg? It ran fine. I decide to pass on buying it but I am still looking for a used RS or LT.

It's somewhat normal if it was shut down hot and immediately left on the sidestand. On some K bikes, a slight bit of oil will leak past the piston rings into the combustion chambers under these conditions, but it burns off after startup.

My 2003 K12GT wasn't bad about post-startup smoking, but I've seen other bikes that could lay down a pretty healthy smoke screen. There are quite a few threads discussing this brick "characteristic" with suggestions for workarounds (e.g., park the bike on the centerstand; shut it off and lean it right for 10 seconds before putting it on the sidestand, etc.)

Some do, some don't when parked on side stand.
I've owned three that did, and three that did not.

Sounds normal if left on the sidestand. My 04 KRS did it.

My '02 KRS with 26k miles did not, but my '04 KGT with less than 3k miles does.

My guess is that once it's broken in, my GT will stop.
