Valve Job / Check and Mileage?

Ok, I know the book says 16,000 miles but how many of you...

A: Actually had them checked?

B: Actually had them need adjustment?

I'm approaching 18k and I don't think there's anything wrong with them, no tapping, runs great, no oil or smoke etc etc. I might be heading down to Tejas and thats going to be 5 thousand or so more miles. So it would either be get them checked and done down there or wait till I'm back in MT and in the low 20's to get them done. The old RT never needed adjustment, however that was a different engine. I just think that these things are pretty tried and true and a valve check is not only inconvenient, but a good way for the dealers to make some cash for what is normally not a big deal.

Educated opinions please! Thanks.

I have had two K1200RS's that accumulated 36,000 miles each on them. I always checked the valve lash at the recommended intervals and found them never to need adjustment.

But there is always the first time when the valve gets too loose or too tight and that can get expensive.

Put 120k miles on 2 LTs, and checked valves every 12k miles. Adjustment was done at one of those checks.

Mine is at the dealer currently for a valve check and new air box install. I should get the bike back in a couple of days and I'll let you know if any adjustments were needed to the valves.

60K and no adjustment needed yet.

However, you may run into lots of issues with the warranty nazis if you don't do your scheduled maint.

If that isn't a concern, I'd let it go 'til after your trip.

valves

my '04kgt has 42k miles on it, valves were checked at 12k, 24k, and last week. the last two checks were done by me in my garage. i may not check them again until 75k or so. they are always right in spec. the only thing i would tell u? go on and check em before the trip. if it's on your mind, u will think about it all the time and it will rob u of many good moments on your trip. drop the left tupperware, unscrew the valve covers, get u a slider guage and getter done! whole thing takes couple of hrs, and your mind will be free to enjoy your ride.

Hey Robert, had mine checked at 19k when they did the air box. The kid at service said they were adjusted. I know he doesn't know what he's talking about as the bill didn't reflect it. It was just a check. All had to be in adjustment as there was no bucket charges.

I haven't heard of any of the new motors needing adjustment yet. If you're planning on a service while in Tejas, you'd best call ahead as all the bike shops are slammed at this time. I'd recommend Lonestar in Austin. If you need a place to stay, or a ride, I have extra room.

Had mine checked at 18K. No adjustment needed at that time.

And I agree with Grif. Make an appointment SOON with Lone Star. They're a class act, but they are always busy.

Now if I can only get out of MT. Was thinking of leaving tomorrow morning. Freakin June 5th and snow levels foretasted down to 4500 feet! Argh!

OK, so as an addendum.......SCREW Lonestar BMW! Can't schedule tires and an oil change for a rider on the road 2500 miles away from home?! Were a month out on service, sorry?

Bite me!

What the F#$K is it with BMW dealerships as of late? I realize it's a busy season, but this is the 3rd dealership that I've run into BS from this year alone. A week ahead of time and they can't fit in even tires and an oil change? Bullshit! The Reno and Las Vegas dealerships pulled the same crap last month. I even said I was open to days and time.

These dealerships are supposed to cater to the BMW rider on the road. It's not like I'm walking in that day and asking for an 8 hour overhaul! What the hell are we supposed to do when were on the road. Carry a tire change and tools?

So much for them being a class act. Now I need to go out of my way to find a way to get tires . Jesus this kind of shit pisses me off....
