? R1200GS what is your opinion

about boxers reliability? I am surfing through the net and reading some horror stories about engine failure, brake failure, fuel pump controller failure etc... Apart from common EWS and battery and ABS issues.
But still that model is the most popular. Why?

Take care!

Power. Rider comfort. Features not found on other dual-sport models.

Boxer engine is pretty much bullet-proof and you can do most of the work on it yourself without major dismantling, unlike models with radiators and hard to access and fix places as the K-series engine has. Electronic suspension is very nice, but will cost $thousand$ if the shocks go bad until rebuilders show up. Falls over with the guard and not much damage is done to bodywork. Battery can be fixed (Odyssey). Final drive failures due to cheap Chinese bearings that flake apart may be outsourced to a better manufacturer by now (Prez of BMW admitted they had some issues with their suppliers). Brake failures are related to the gorilla on the assembly line who likes to tighten cable clamps to 300 ft./lbs. and does the same with the ignition cabling (if you can't spin the tie with your fingers it's too tight!)

It all comes with a price.

Anything else?

Well, nice explanations

Hope they could help someone stranded in the middle of Siberia

And what do you think about F800GS? Is it an eqivalent replacement of R12GS for solo rides/or two bike-two rider team?

Take care!
