Handlebar cracked

Well here's an interesting problem:

That angle is looking up at the bottom of the throttle...

I was having issues with the brake lever and throttle rotating a lot more than the rubber mount should allow. Throttle was really giving me fits, but I could tell it wasn't a fueling issue. I got to inspecting it and thats what I found.

I could see it on a 10 year old bike, but right at two years? It looks like there is quite a bit of corrosion and the thing was never really radiused and cleaned up properly.

Might be worth a look on your GT just to catch it before it fails...

Cracked throttle

Yo Rich, if you wouldn't twist the throttle so damn hard maybe it wouldn't have cracked!

Cheers!

Do you live in an area affected by salt water spray? Geez that seems like a lot of corrosion for two years. Any other areas that look that bad?

Not much salt water related corrosion 'round these parts. But I will be looking hard at the rest of the bike. The left bar looks fine.

I just did a service on it the day before, and didn't see any other problems.

Yikes! Nice find, but... damn.

Have you ever done anything to stress the handlebars, like tie it down or something? Ever had service on them? (That is, could it maybe have been damaged when being taken apart or put back together?)

The picture seems bigger to me now than the first time I looked at it. To me it looks like the "real" bar is under the black painted part (that the bracket is welded to that cracked), it looks like the outer part maybe is just for the throttle and switches, not like the bar itself is cracked. NOT that you want that outer part to go falling off...........

I do occasionally use a Z-Technic mount for a camera there. Perhaps...

The crack seems to be what keeps the whole assy. from rotating, but the bar is held on from the inboard side by a bolt through the inside of the actual bar. I haven't had a chance to take it apart yet, and I can't find a parts catalog online for it, yet. I think my reprom might have a picture.

I'll keep you updated when I get to the fix.

Live near coast?

Agree with previous post - my first thought was whether you lived near the coast. That seems to be some serious corrosion for 2 years. Has it seen an abnormal amount of weather? No lay downs or drops on that side? Just went out and looked at mine and it has no signs of corrosion after a little less than 1 year and 6k miles. A poorly cleaned and painted weld from the factory might explain some of the rust but that crack is odd.
