My accident...

Well, I had an accident on my baby a couple of weeks ago. It was a Tuesday and I was headed to work. The short of it was while I was looking right and left to make sure no one was coming trough the intersection, the traffic in front of me stopped short and I wasn't able to get out of the way fast enough. I almost made it, but still managed to hit the left corner of the rear bumber of the car in front of me. Basically, I hit the bumper, came to a instant stop and dropped to the right side. It all happened in a second or two.

Visually, there wasn't much damage. The front fender broke off, the front tire was flat, there was a section of the wheel that broke and lots of cosmetic damage to the fairing and side case on the right side.

I walked away with just a small cut on my finger. There was no damage to the clothes I was wearing; not a mark on my jacket, nor was there a scratch on the helmet. I was able to get up and get the bike up and over to the side of the road.

I had the bike towed to BMW of SF. The repair estimate was $11,258.79. I have to admit I was surprised at the amount and why they just didn't total it, but I don't know how these things work. According to my credit union, the value of the bike is right around $15,000. I asked the service manager why it costs so much and he said that that since they really can't tell how bent (if at all) the front forks might be, they just replace it. So, a new front end is on order.

I should have my baby back in a week or so (it's already been a week since they ordered the parts). I hope to have it back sooner than later.

Why didn't the insurance company total it, if the repair is so closae to the value of the bike?? I would take the cash, and leave the bike for that much damage.

They really didn't give my a choice about it. They told me that they were going to repair it.

Still, it seems odd that they would repair it.

Glad you're OK. The bike can be fixed. I'm curious -- were you wearing gloves?

I have to appreciate your dealer. To change entire front fork is the right thing to do. It might be over reaction, but checking the fork is also quite complicated. And still the result could be that it has to be changed. After seing a photo of your broken wheel, I can imagine that front fork has got also quite a hard hit. So it might be bent.

And dealer thinks also his own wallet. So, changing entire fork is a win-win situation for you and your dealer.
