5w-40 BMW motor oil

I just read a thread over on the BMWMOA Forum that says BMW is now producing and recommending a synthetic 5w-40 motor oil for the newer K12/13 series bikes. The new recommendation is to start using this oil after the 600 mile service. Somethiing to do with the clutch.

Anyway, can anybody verfity this?

Thanks Dave

I've read about individual dealers promoting 5W-40, but haven't seen any official documentation from BMW.

Were these UK bikes? Remember, sometimes a specific country's importers will set up certain recommendations or service bulletins that may differ from the BMW factory.

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Doesn't appear that these were UK bikes.

Oil and filter

I've heard from the dealer there is a recommended oil and filter for the 1300s.

Recomended oil

This is correct, when I had my K1300GT in for its first service, the oil that BMW recommends is Castrol 4T racing. It is very expensive in Australia $70($US50) for 4 litres from memory and only available in 4 litre lots.
cheers Andrew

Complained about "CLUTCH SQUEAL" on my 06 GT with 28000 miles on it, to my dealer and on warranty had the new Modified clutch fitted - this goes along with an oil change to 5-40 and a new filter.
By the way this new clutch is a million miles better and no squeal .

+1 After complaining about clutch squeal I was told to use Castrol RS R4 4T 5x - 40, available here: http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1...em=CAS_12904_G

It has lessened the squeal, but it is still there...waiting for BMW to replace the clutch in the fall w/ an '09 clutch.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.

Also have clutch squeal and shudder.

My dealer has already replaced the clutch once....which worked for a few miles until it turned up again during a 2k ride.

I was told last week by my dealer that BMW is now recommending using the new oil after the first 600 miles on all K12/1300 bikes.

We'll see how it addresses the issue. Plan to pick some up this week and do an oil change - hopefully it cures the issues.

I used 5w-40 Silkolene PRO 4 Plus motorcycle oil for my last (36K) oil change. Previously I had a very occasional clutch judder. Most often if 2 up and loaded. Done about 800 miles now, 600 with pilion and luggage. No judder at all to date. Gear box feels a bit smoother, maybe that's just the fresh oil?
