Oil Change/Service Interval

Am I missing something, or does the BMW "Rider's Manual" for the K1300GT not provide the actual recommended mileage/time for service intervals and oil change?
My dealer tells me to have a service every 6,000 miles, but also says I should get the oil changed every 3,000 miles. I am especially curious about the "3,000 miles" for the oil change. Is it really necessary to change the oil that often?

Your not missing anything the K1200GT manual does not mention a service interval either. I think it just says get annual service. Fear not the little light known as a service minder will come on when you need an oil change. It should come on at 6000 miles, then even after you change the oil you will need to reset the light with a GS911, or a visit to the dealer.

I ride a lot of urban stop 'n' go, and change the oil every 3,000 miles, using the standard BMW-approved oil, not synthetic. Because of the frequent changes, using synthetic doesn't seem worth the cost.

I run synthetic, and have gone well over 10K miles between changes. Sometimes, you're out on a long trip and don't want to mess with oil changes (although I've also done them in a parking lot before).

The factory recommends 6K between oil changes. I don't see any real benefit in changing any sooner than that (except maybe to the dealer's bottom line).

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re oil change: does the bike "know" if the oil is low or the viscosity is thin or does it just know it's 6000 miles and should be time for an oil change?

There is a low oil level warning light, but I doubt that is used to trigger a Service light. My guess is that it's simply mileage based.

Anyone care to read section 10 of their owners manual? Did I get a secret copy that lists the service intervals and a place for the dealer to stamp and sign that the work was done? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

My service light has just came on at 6,000 miles. I serviced the bike at 3,000 when I bought it. Is visiting the dealer or buying the GS911 tool the only way to get the light out? Where can I get GS911 tool and how much does it cost?

Fine print on back side of the cover:
Order No.: 01 47 7 706 157
06.2006, 2nd Edition

Entire section 10 is called "Service" and describes what gets done when and many pages where the servicing dealer puts a stamp in the book to show the work completed.
