Got the little <!> thingie this morning

...on the way into work. It came on while at a stop light. How low does the oil level get when this thing comes on?

Good question, but sounds like it is time to check your oil.

Don't worry, that symbol comes on if you are just a few ounces low. I found out right after my 600 mile service. When I got the bike back, I used the BC button to cycle through to the oil check, and I got the symbol. Checked the oil with the dipstick, and it was just below the Min mark. I added about 4 ounces of oil, and the little check mark came right back on, then I called Manhattan BMW to bitch, they mailed me a quart of oil, with an apology. Bottom line the sensor is very sensitive, as it should be, don't worry about it ride home add a few ounces you should be good to go. I think if your really low oil a different light comes on, making you aware you have an oil pressure problem, and its time to kill the engine immediately.

If it's just the triangle, how do you know it's because of low oil??
I usually get it from low fuel.

Because the symbol he's describing isn't the normal warning triangle, but a dark text <!> symbol down in the normal display panel where the odometer and other BC functions are shown.

Like Daniel said, the BMW warning sensors are very sensitive, and go off much sooner than panic time. So ride the bike home, then manually check the oil level with the bike warm and top off as necessary.

If the <!> symbol comes on again anytime soon, then you can start to worry.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Hey Ken, save us all a look at the manual, what warning lights comes on when oil pressure is low? If I recall correctly, the triangle comes on in red. Just got back from a quick shake out on the GT, and packing it up for a two week trip. Heading down to Blueridge Mountain Parkway, Deals Gap, Jack Daniels Distillery, then over to the MOA Rally in Tenn. on the 16th, heading back up to Montauk NY on the 20th spending the rest of the time out in the Hamptons. Looking forward to first decent trip with the GT. Hope to see some of you at the Rally.

Well, the little symbol thingie didn't come on again, but i did check the oil level when I got home and found i to be about halfway between the min and max mark. It's flashed earlier this week while I was on a trip, but went off and never came back on until yesterday morning. I added just a little oil to be safe. I have noticed that on hot days when stopped on on incline is when I'm most likely to see it.
