Final Drive Failure

I just returned from a two week trip to the Canadian Rockies last Thursday. On Friday I washed the bike and while cleaning some road tar off of the rear wheel something didn't feel right. When I grabbed the tire I could move the back of the wheel laterally 1/4th of an inch in both directions. No drive fluid leakage; no unusual noise - no warning.
My GT is an '07 with 20,300 miles. I changed the Final Drive fluid at 600, 6000 and 12000 miles - Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube 75W-90.
I dropped it off at the dealer today. I road it there and it felt fine...I wonder how many miles I rode with it that way coming back from Canada? After two LT's and a GT I'm used to glancing at the rear wheel looking for a leaking FD but I guess I'll have to give the wheel a shake every once in a while.
After reading about the many FD failures interrupting riders trips I feel lucky that mine got me home.

Yes you are lucky.

So am I! I'm on my third FD, but have never been stranded by that particular failure! (Knocking on wood)

Man I keep getting paranoid reading about these things. Make sure you record it in the poll section. Glad you made it OK. And I was just thinking of heading up to BC this week too......hope it's not a bad omen.

Bruce, that sucks. And I know exactly how you feel. Twice.

Good thing you found it after the big ride.

About 88K, and NOT counting! (I've put 10K on my old RT since I can't keep the GT on the road this year!)

In my case they seem to go out about every 30K, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed this summer, especially if I get the bike back in time for the trip around the US.

I know what you mean. I always felt it was bad luck to read about FD failures (that old stick your head in the sand thing).
I was up your way a couple of times on this trip. Once on the way to Kalispell from Orofino and on the way back from Washington on our way to Helena. It's always great to visit and ride the roads in your neck of the woods.
