Towing Question

I just had to use my AAA towing. It is limited to 100 miles of free towing, then it's pay by the mile. Is there other packages out there that anyone feels is good?

GEICO takes care of me and has bailed me out once or twice, but their tow mileage is only 75 miles. AAA said I can only get their road side assistance on my bike if I insure with them. Odd, I have my cars with GEICO too and they let me get he roadside assistance on them ... I think I just got an idiot on the phone.

The BMW roadside assistance is to the nearest BMW facility and that could be more than 100 miles.

I believe you can bump the AAA another level or two depending on your needs. I've used it as well on the GT and they called me several times about the haul, and then the flatbeds hauler called me twice and told me they have one guy (the owner) who was more experienced hauling motorcycles and they'd send him out. Wait was about 35 minutes or so. No bad, considering they let me know maybe 5 times what was going on. I initiated the tow via their website's "Online assistance" not knowing I would get a flood of phone calls too.

In California, I do know they are different in the north and south plans and phone numbers to call. My cellphone has both numbers preloaded due to the BMW's finickiness. I believe in the South they call it the Southern California Automobile Club (or Auto Club of So. California?) and in the North is Triple A or the Auto Club. I think I pay an extra $25 a year for the Motorcycle/RV package over the car's.

Sorry, but I cannot go with GEICO *EVER* since they once (per Car & Driver mag.) - and maybe still do - funded the police departments with radar/lidar guns too which also raises their policyholder's premiums should they get nailed (The GT might be especially vulnerable! ). They then get more coins from you, and then get a wonderful write-off for their donation to the police too. Then take your remaining coins and fly of to Tobago for a T&E write-off too. And people wonder why insurance companies stink! (AIG anyone?)
Sorry. But that sort of crap don't fly in my book.

For better or worse, I recently dropped AAA after many years with them. They were just getting more restrictive, and more expensive. Also, their general direction seems to be moving away from the "automobile club" values and more into a cruise and travel agency organization. I was getting tired of funding this activity when they were spending little on automotive/road issues.

I ended up going with the AMA's road service now being offered with membership. Also, I have additional coverage with my bike insurance (Progressive) and the BMW roadside assistance with the new bike.

These other packages have less towing miles tied to them than my "deluxe" AAA membership, but for the number of times I have used AAA (zero) over the years, a big towing bill every once and awhile would still be cheaper than maintaining their costly service.

All that said, the only thing I ever DID get from AAA was hotel discounts. I may end up going back to a "basic" AAA service at some point, just for that. But we'll see.

Not true. AAA with the RV+ option covers bikes without having their specific insurance as well. Plus I've used their hotel discount many times, and gotten dozens of free maps, too.

Also watch your Geico policy closely. They have provisions where riding more than 500 miles in a day can render their coverage null and void. Are you kidding me?

Hence my comment "I think I just got an idiot on the phone. "

I use it for my car, have tons of their maps, get hotel discounts and so forth as well.

As for traveling more than 500 miles a day,
A) there is no clause in my policy that says that
B) even if there was, they would spend more in legal fees getting subpoenas and warrants to gather the associated data to prove it and fight it than it would cost just to give me a brand new bike.
