Battery Charger Failure...Power Surge???

A day ago, noticed that no LED's were showing even though my charger was plugged in and hooked to the motorcycle. This seemed odd; but I realized we had had a terrrible lightning storm 2 days prior and a lightning strike occurred very close to the house. In fact we lost all cable tv/internet service.
Unplugged recycled my key and watched as I replugged charger. All LED's came on...for a few moments. Then they all went out! I had the charger checked by my BMW tech today. It is a no go. Will need to be replaced at about 5 yrs. of age.
Questions to all of you:
Any of you had similar occurrence?
Possibility of a power surge doing this?
What chance would there be of surge running through the wire and ruining the electronics on myGT? Should I consider the old style BMW charger attached to fused pigtails wired direct to battery?

Living in Florida, this is all too frequent of an occurrence. Everything (except florescent light fixtures and other "cheap" stuff) is on a surge protector. But, even at that, it is only of limited use if you have a nearby strike.

I once lost every electrical item I had in the garage (mostly battery tenders) when a bolt struck a nearby tree.

Surge protectors? Hell, some of the chargers were UNPLUGGED at the time, and were still fried. All that was required was that they were sitting on the concrete floor. Deltran (the Battery Tender guys) as well as other folks were pleased at my resulting generous order!

Your situation would not shock me (pun not intended) at all...
