Iron Butt Rally

Sorry if this is already in a thread somewhere... I didn't see it though.

Anyone been keeping up with the Rally? Our own Meese got his own paragraph in the intro update:

One of the “rookies” in this year’s rally with a good shot at winning is Ken Meese. Meese was offered a slot in this year’s rally due to his extraordinary string of four victories in shorter endurance events earlier this year. However, Ken is no stranger to multi-day rallies. Last year, he came within an eyelash of winning the 7-day SPANK rally. With more points in hand than eventual winner Matt Watkins, Ken became a DNF (did not finish) when the final drive on his BMW K1200GT failed just over 200 miles from the finish line. Meese is taking a chance on the same bike in this rally. But, like Jeff Earls, he will be carrying a spare final drive.

He was in 38th place after scoring at the first checkpoint (day 3). He ran out of gas on the 2nd leg, but was rescued almost immediately by another very sportsmanlike rider who got some gas for him. They should be updating the standings in another day or two when they've scored the 2nd checkpoint.

I can't ride crazy miles like these guys, but it's fascinating reading. They update the reports in the right-hand side of the page more-or-less daily: http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm

I should have noted that 38th is not too bad a spot to be in - there are a TON of riders with point totals near Ken's, and a handful with a lot more. In past rallies, it has been commonplace for the riders with super-high scores on the first leg to burn out, so Ken is very much still alive for a strong finish - GO KEN

If Ken pulls out a win - and the guy who went and got him gas comes in second - wonder if there's gonna be a bit of anger later on in the parking lot?

The point spread looks pretty extreme though since some went into shock when they heard the point tally extremes at the first meeting point. Seems some people just don't need any sleep.

Fwiw, I work with one guy who has worked 16 hour days for the past ten years. Yep. He works 80 hours a week and he still somehow functions even on 3 hours a night sleep. Supposedly Jay Leno has the same sleep issue.

I saw where one R1150RT blew a final drive that BMW ignores as an issue. An older LT blew out the clutch and the rider went home as it was too unreliable. So far no Gen II models have blown up...yet.

I think both the the Suzuki Wankel's blew up?

No BMW K1300's entered as they wouldn't start due to faulty switch-gear.
