I've heard of one or two others having to replace bulbs as frequently, but it's not very common at all.

Personally, I'd upgrade the H7 low beam to an HID and be done with it.

DDM Tuning offers single H7 HID upgrade kits for $25, or dual kits for $50 (just in case you want to do the high beam as well).

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

I put in the sylvania xtravision bulb H7 12.8V 55W
I am told the bike calls for H7 12V 55W
Don't want to seem stupid but the 12.8 is ok isn't it?

Should be fine. But, picking at nits, 12.8v technically is rated too low. You have an alternator that can be regulated to put out 14v, mainly to charge the battery. But, those bulbs should be capable of dealing with 14v without issue. It's called a 12v system, but it's a teeny bit more.

Also, make sure you don't allow your fingers to touch the glass of the bulb at all during installation. That shortens bulb life.

I used to run PIAA bulbs because they put out more light. Since they were warranted for a year, I would sometimes get three bulbs for the price of one. And, I'll go about 24k miles per year. But, if you're after light output, seriously consider getting the HID kit for the low beam. Then after seeing the results, you'll be more comfortable getting the dual kit for the high beams later on.

Yes, that happens.

I went through about a bulb every 10-15K. I finally put an HID in, so I hope not to be changing THOSE bulbs!!!

They claim Halogen bulbs last around 750 hours, or around 40K miles at a 55 mph average. They also claim that HID bulbs are good for 2500-3000 hours, or well over 150K miles.

My original HID upgrade kit has survived two bikes and well over 100K miles, although it is starting to dim somewhat from when it was new. And the factory HID on my GT is still going strong at 115K miles.

I must ride a lot at night (with all kinds of critters big & small by roads) so I changed the low beam to a digital HID 4300. Also jacked up the headlight module as it was tilted WAY too downward at factory. I had installed PIAA Extreme Whites in the high beams before the HID but that was not that effective. Now, even without using the highs, the HID low beam alone is a huge upgrade. The night visibility is exceptionally improved, especially with the PIAA highs working with the HID, and the color temps are quite close to one another.

Low Beam

The low beam on my 06 went out at 12, 500 miles this weekend. Fortunately it was very easy to change.

The GT uses H7 bulbs in all three positions (1 low beam, 2 high beam).

And you want the HID color temp to be near 4,300K which most closely approximates natural daylight. You can go with 5000K which will have a very slight bluish tinge. Anything above that gets into brighter blues and purples. Not only are these colors more likely to draw undue attention to your bike, they also put significantly less useable light down onto the road.

DDM also offers both 35W and 55W kits. Supposedly, a 55W kit would put out more light than a 35W kit, but I've never used one so I can't say for sure. I do have 200,000 miles on 35W HIDs and I can tell you they put out a significant amount of light.

So for a low beam only, order a single, 35W, H7, 4500K kit.

For high beams, order the same, except a dual kit. And be amazed at the massive daylight available at the simple flick of a switch.
