Instruments frozen

So I fire up the bike to head to work tonight, and as I'm rolling down the road I notice that my instrument panel shows me in neutral! (not the light, just the gear posit. indicator.)
Also the battery symbol shows on the LCD, but without any warning/caution light.
The temp never moved, but at least the trip odometer did...
It seems to be just frozen at the spot where the key is initially turned on.
Anyone seen this or got any suggestions before I get a chance to tear into it?

So did it fix itself on the way home or is it still flaky? How new is your battery?

Thanks Doru! Makes sense, but I sure don't like that resolution!

Okay, so I walked out this morning and fired it up: normal ops! Just got home a little bit ago and it was fine for the hour ride home...

I was wondering about the battery state, but it seems to be fine. I drive it every day and if it parked more than a couple of days, as with my last pothole incident, it is on a tender. This IS my third battery, but seems to be plenty strong.

If it keeps up I'll let Y'all know what I find, or more likely: don't find!
