Final drive fluid ?

What fluid do you run in you're final drive and why ? I just had the drive replaced @ 17K miles and want to change the fluid since I put on a additional 1200 miles last week.

I've been running Amsoil Severe Gear Syn. Oil (75-90) in my final. I send the old stuff to Blackstone Labs for analysis to see if any metal is showing up. So far so good, and it actually came back better this time than the prior for some reason. I only put back the 180cc. recommended worth now rather than to the fill plug.

I use Amsoil GL-5 80/90 Synthetic gear oil. I renew it every other tire change.

Any 75W-90 synthetic gear oil is fine (Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc.). BMW recommended interval is now 12k miles, 180 ml fill. Most change it every other tire change, saves some time since the wheel is already off.

.....cheapest insurance you can buy. imo. final drive and engine/tranny oil. This discussion has been going on forever, but when you get right down to it, I want to have the cleanest freshest smoothest micron of lube keeping everything sliding that I can.
Maybe its just me, but peace of mind is a wonderful thing...

I saw what the dealer used on the first 1000 klm service and bought the same, Bel Ray 75-90 Synthetic. I changed it last week, and replaced the grayish stuff with the red Bel Ray. It was changed at 1000 klm, then 20000klm. I asked to do it at the spendy 40000klm but judging from what came out of the final drive last week at 50000 I wouldn't bet on it.

I also plan to do it every other tire change.

Bests Regards
