Just another oil thread

Dealer sold me 4 qts and a filter. Didn't ask for any preference, which is MY fault, sold me the new (I guess) synthetic at $15/qt? Yeeesh, Spectro next time, although the full synth Spectro might be as much. What are the front runners on oil now? This is the 3rd oil change I will do (well, including the 1st time the dealer did it actually), and as far as i know the first time to get synth oil.
New oil say it's for models since 2000.

ps just checked, yes the bottle says it's packaged exclusively for BMW by Spectro Oils od America. They used to do the same thing back in the 80s, the BMW oil was Golden Spectro, this stuff is probably just the Platinum Spectro (full synth). I will at least feel better about having the receipt from a BMW dealer for the oil in case my engine lunches.

I hope I don't spoil it for myself, but Brown Motor Works will do an oil change and filter for $49.95 (dino) or $69.95 (synthetic). I can't buy the oil and filter at another local dealer for that price. Dave Brown once told me it is a loss leader to help people learn about his excellent service team. Of course they use BMW-specified oil and filters. See: http://www.brownmotorworks.net/oil_a...er_special.asp

Rotella 5W-40 synthetic, $22/gallon at Wally World. Good stuff and it's even JASO rated.
