Question Tire suggestions?

I've been running the Avon Storms for the last few years. They have been fine running...no issues except.....
Well I ride mostly heavy and two up and I only get over 6k miles on the rears with the center wearing out. Is this expected because of my type of riding? My wife and I love riding together so that's my bulk of riding, and long distance too not much local.

Should I get the Storm 2 Ultra's next?

Haven't ridden on the Storms. Pilot Road 2's, 10k on the first ones. Bridgestones came on the bike and were toast at 6k. Second set of PR2's are too new.

So far I like my Metzler Interact Z6, I believe they are replacing the RoadTec Z6. They wound the belts tighter and closer together at the center for better wear life. As you move out the tire the belts or wire is spread out more and not as tight allowing the tire to flex. So far I do like them, only miles will tell.

The only thread better than tires is an oil thread

As long as you're not installing car tires on the rear like some of my Goldwing buddies are doing, any modern radial is OK. I also ride two up 95% of the time and over the last 8 years would say the Pilot Road 2 is my favorite. The Bridgestone Battleaxes had the front cup on the RT and were ok as stock on my GT. I tried Avon Storms on the RT and they vibrated at speed, not a balance issue just the tread. I'm currently on Metz Z6 at my dealers recommendation.

Here's what I've used and the mileage returned since buying the GT in '06.
0 - 7960 mi - stock Bridgestones
7960 - 13965 (6005 mi) don't remember (!)
13965 - 23489 (9524 mi) Pilot Road 2
23489 - present around 31000 (7500 mi) Metzeler Z6, probably another 1500 miles in them

Picked up a nail in my rear Avon while riding in Montana. Went to the only dealer in the town, the only 180/55/17 in stock was a Shinko 009 Raven, as I was 1500 miles from home and the next nearest dealer of any sort was 90 miles way. I decided this would have to do, Plus it was only $135 mounted and balanced, included taking the wheel off the bike (Single sided swing arm and four lug bolts isn't much work).

The tire now was 5600 miles on it, it handles well in the wet, does not slip or slide for my riding in the few curves we have in Michigan. Still have about an 1/8" of tread before the wearbars. I am guessing I will get 9,000+, about the same as the Avons maybe a little more, the OEM BT020s were about 6500 miles.

Tire Selection

KBMWRS;
2Wheeler is right, there seems to be something almost religious about selecting just the right tread design and casing configuration.
First, I would say your wear pattern is what should be expected for two-up riding. However, the roads about your area are fraught with great curves and more than ample to scrub off some of that sidewall tread. About the Storms, just do not know, but my tires on the GTs for the past 4 years (one-up riding over 150k miles) have averaged between 2,500 and 6,500 miles for the set. So I think you are getting pretty good mileage. You might consider the Continental ContiRoadAttack tires as they tend to be a bit harder composition and geared for the touring rider.
Just my $.02. Have fun in your experiment. Ride safe.

Bt-023

I do not ride with a pillion and mostly commute. I tried most of the tires that fit on a K12-13.
The Bridgestone front tire is usually completely gone at 6K miles. But only the BT tire gives a rock solid feel to this bike.
For what it's worth
Best regards

I've heard some good things about the new Bridgestone BT-023s. Apparently, there is an 023GT tire made specifically for heavier motorcycles. I'll be purchasing new tires over the winter and am considering these. I had BT020s and BT021s on my old R11R and while I got good mileage out of them (>6500 miles) they wore poorly and cupped quite a bit. Bridgestone claims the new 023s offer a 30% increase in tire life and no/less cupping due to a new rubber compound. Is anyone using these tires yet? Comments..........
