A fresh start (WARNING oil thread)

My 2008 k1200gt will be back with a new clutch assly and some minor cosmetics surgery. With the white sh*t (snow) coming down this morning all I got to do is think about what oil should I use? The bike has 52000 klm and never used a drop of oil. I used what the dealer use, Motul 3000 10-40 mineral, changes at app. 8000 - 10000 klm (5 - 8000 miles).

With the grooved clutch basket issues, is there a proven improvement in using a particular type of magic oil??

And what would it be?

Best Wishes

Bests Regards

Sylvain

I like the Castrol 5-40 that BMW now recommends. http://www.kneedraggers.com/product/...Oil-1.0-Liters

BMW changed the oil recommendation for the bike you have about one year ago. They now recommend BMW 5W40 Super Synthetic. My understanding is that it's really good dino oil, not true synthetic, and the only thing super about it is the price at about 17 dollars per quart. Just changed mine today after 6k miles it did not burn a drop, and barely any metal particles on the magnet in the drain plug.

I heard the same good comments about how good is this recently approved Bimmer oil. At 17.00$ ea it should ... be good. But for all we know bmw could have Shell supply the Rotella 5w40 and relabelling it under bimmer stamp while adding 12.00$ to the can

Anyhow, I wonder who is the supplier of this bmw wonder 5w40 oil??

Bests Regards

I believe I heard that BMW oil is made for them by Golden Spectrol. Why spend the extra money on the BMW product when the Golden Spectrol synthetic blend is about half the cost. I use the same stuff in my Husky which is now owned by BMW. Go figure

I'm pretty sure the BMW Super Synthetic is made by Castrol. If I recall correctly it referenced Castrol on the bottle or the Manual for the bike. I have a little left in a bottle next trip to the garage I will check. An observation though since I just changed the oil. I rode the bike pretty hard for about 60 miles just before I parked in my garage, and drained and changed the oil within 10 minutes or so of the ride. The oil was not very hot, nowhere near as hot as the oil in any of my cars when I change their oil. I guess the oil cooler, and water cooled engine really do the trick allowing for 6K intervals.
