Do I really need a "B" spec rear tire???

Time for new rubber.. I'm going to buy a set of the new Michelin Pilot Road 3. They have a "B" spec rear which they say is for lot's of two up riding and loaded touring.. I don't do either of these things. Solo 100% of the time and when I tour I don't load the crap out of the bike, maybe 35lbs of stuff if that. I have Pilot Road 2 on the bike now with a non "B" rear and I've had no issues. From what I understand the "B" has an extra ply, that's it. The non "B" has the same weight rating and same tread depth. Bike is a 2008 K12GT; thoughts, opinions..

You only "need" it for peace of mind. I've ridden both B and regular and never had an issue. There was a guy on here years ago that had a sidewall blow out though on a non B. He was fully loaded doing a lot of high speed miles. For me I only ride the non B if I have no choice. Just cheap insurance I suppose. One less thing to worry about a thousand miles from home. I'm one up 99% of the time too and fully loaded. Top case, sides full of gear. Definitely more than 35 lbs. Never noticed any handling difference between the two.

If the non-B PR2 is working fine for you, the non-B PR3 should be just fine.

Go for it, and be sure to give us updates as you wear through them.

This is a great question and one I haven't seen the answer to. My assumption would be that they just made the new 3's with the "B" spec already built in instead of 2 different 3's. But I do not know for sure.

Any tire gurus out there with a definitive answer?

I tour primarily two up with a buttload of camping gear and have pulled trailers with both C and B tires with no problem. Many others in my regional club report the same results here at my shop. I was a metzeler man til I tried the PR2, looking foward to trying the PR3 when this one wears out.
