Air filter ?

Can I use the conical air filter for a 2010 on my 08 GT ? The new filter looks like it has MUCH more surface area and would be less likely to impede air flow.

I don't see why not. The air box and the air intake snorkel have the same part numbers between the K12GT and the K13GT. Only the filter part # is different.

For reference, the K12 "flat" filter is part # 13 71 7 703 583 listed at $22.47.

And the K13 "conical" filter is part # 13 71 7 713 428 listed at $40.41.

This thread discusses the same question with a little more detail: http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=22107

One comment says that installing a K13 filter in a K12 bike resulted in increased noise. The owner switched back to the stock K12 filter.

I wonder whether the K12 ECU programming can detect and manage the difference in air flow between the two air filters? It probably doesn't make a difference, but I was just thinkin'. I suspect that the two ECUs have been hard-coded with an assumption that the "correct" filters (K12 vs K13) are present in the respective bikes.

I doubt very much that there would be any mapping difference based on the air filter. That would mean that the original flat filter was significantly more restrictive than the conical unit, and that doesn't seem logical since one would expect that the original filter was sized adequately. In fact absent any data that indicates that the conical filter does anything at all for the K1200 I would question whether one would really get anything at all for their extra $17.50. Only the dyno knows for sure.
