Sticky throttle

Ok, before anyone jumps up and down about doing a search, I did search for this but the articles I found are about 2 yrs old and rather revive a 2 yr old thread I thought I would open a new one.

I have an '06 with 72K. My throttle is not returning to idle when the grip is released. I can't tell if it's the cable, or some trash in the grip, or a weak spring. Does anyone know how to remove the grip without destroying the grip? Or does anyone have any idea why my throttle is not returning (closing) after opening?

I did notice that when I twist it wide open I can see the cable move slightly where it goes across the bar and then down into the bowels of the bike. Right at that turn is where I see slight movement.

My '06 has about the same mileage. I had issues with the cruise control staying engaged so I had all the cables changed out. I had some minor throttle issue but nothing since the fresh cables.

Are you sure the throttle is physically not closing against the stop or are you assuming that because the engine will not return to idle properly? I only mention it because there is a well-known issue with early 1200's concerning the ideal air bypass valve. If this is sticking then it could present similar symptoms to a throttle problem.

The throttle physically stays in place and the engine will remain at the rpm until I physically roll the throttle back. It's like I have a Throttlemeister installed.

Yeah, my cruise won't even set. I'm going to check the cables. I think my have either frayed or got pinched somehow.

When I bought my 07 used with 12k on it I found that I had to adjust the cable at the grip end to take up some slack and then lubed the mechanisms at the grip with a light silicone. All has been fine for the last 6k.

This was exactly my issue. The shop said I had a lot of slop in the cable. That also fixed the cruise control issue.
