Another TPMS Question

Hello all.

I have been reading a lot about fixing the TPMS sensors on this site and the iBMW.com site.

I changed my tires last night and put new batteries in each of my sensors and reinstalled them.

I thought I read somewhere that the system should reset itself after a few miles of riding once the sensors synched with the head unit again. However, mine did not. I rode the bike for approximately 10 miles and reached speeds of about 55-60 MPH a few times.

I still have the same reading on the computer as before, the system shows only dashes for both front and rear......and of course the great big giant yellow triangle.

The build date for my K12GT is late 2006 to the best of my knowledge.

Question: Do I have to take this thing to the dealer to get them to clear the code and reset the system?

Many thanks in advance for any specific responses to this issue.

Based on my experience with replacing the battery in the rear sensor I would say no you do not have take it to the dealer. Mine took quite a while to show up but it did eventually start working and worked for several hundred miles before it became intermittent. It continues to be intermittent, works one day and not the next. It must be an poor connection to the battery as the first failure came after a particularly rough stretch of gravel road. It'll be awhile before I have time to take the tire off and and attempt a repair. Am certainly tired of the yellow triangle, but will give it one more go before I buy a new sensor.
Did you solder the battery tabs to the tabs from the board?
I only soldered the top tab but not the bottom one.

I didn't solder either of them on either sensor. The bottom tab connects just fine so I could tell. Yes, the top tab could be suspect, but I used some rather sticky tape and made it flat with the battery and held it in place. I used hot glue to secure the battery in place and cover the area similar to they way it was after original manufacturing.

Oh, well. I tried and I thought it would work. I wish there was a way to test them out before putting them back on the wheel.....that's what sucks about it. No way to verify.

Maybe I'll unhook the battery and try to reset everything and see if that helps anything.

Do not jury-rig the battery connections, they will fail for sure... eventually at least, if not right away. The only right way to make the connections is solder. You can't solder directly to a standard battery but you can order the exact battery with pre-attached solder tabs from any electronics supply house (DigiKey, etc.). They don't cost any more than the regular batteries.

I ordered the batteries from Amazon

Will solder both tabs next time. And yes, it would be nice to know it was transmitting
before putting the tire back on. I read somewhere about mounting the sensor to something
that spins to achieve 15+mph and that would "turn" it on. I assume if that was done near the
bike that the TPMS ECU would recognize it. May have to try that.

Well...I went out on the bike for another couple hours yesterday and it doesn't seem like the TPMS will connect. My belief is that the head unit crashed on me, but I don't know that for sure.

I just don't see how it is possible that BOTH the batteries top tabs aren't connected the way I put them back together.

I guess I'll just have to deal with the yellow triangle until the next time I change the tires.....or the rest of the time I own this bike.

If you only used tape to attach the terminals to the batteries then... it's possible.

It is also possible that there is life on Mars. I am confident in my abilities to repair things, Sir. Not saying that I always do it correct..........or the way others would do it, but it usually works out.

Sorry, not meant as an insult. It's just that taped connections don't work reliably no matter how careful you are.

No issues.

I used some really sticky tape to hold the tabs down, and then I used a hot glue gun to seal everything up again while holding the tab down tight to the battery with a punch. It is very possible that the connection isn't reliable simply because I didn't solder it. I read somewhere and watched a YouTube video where some folks were saying not to solder the connection because it wouldn't take to the battery very well.

It is what it is at this point. I think I need to get the head unit checked out to see if it took a crap on me.
