2008 1200gt tranny housing leak

at 14k miles my 1200gt has developed a small oil leak that is creating a nasty mess around the shifter area. has anybody else seen this happen? the tranny has a side cover plate, where the shift selector rod pokes out...the leak appears to be on the top of that plate. 4 screws hold that plate on, so removing the plate and resealing it might fix the problem. has anyone performed this operation...can that plate come off easily?

talked to mechanic today...said it comes off and is resealed with silicone goop. no hidden surprises within. will do it tonight.
