Top case mounting system???

Ok..first sorry for the simple question but....

I have a '06 K1200GT. Years ago I bought a BMW top case and all is good. mounts fine.

I go to my BMW dealer and of course am set upon by a salesman while I peruse the new K1600GTs. Now maybe down the road I would maybe buy one so I'm interested whether the top case I have will mount on the new GT. He says no. He goes on that only BMWs newer than 2011 have different mounting and that my old '06 top case wouldn't work. He said even R versions are different.

Now I highly doubt this. Others I have talked to at BMW say it will mount ok.

Please don't inform me that the GTL has a top case...I know that. I prefer the slight difference of the GT.

So the question/s...

Will my top case mount a new 1600GT?

When did this (my) BMW mounting system come into being?....I know it works on BMWs a few years earlier than my '06.

Thanks guys.
I know the knowledge here is swift and mostly correct.

You didn't say which topcase you have, but maybe this will help: http://www.teileineile.de/en/bmw-mot...aluminium-matt

Can't be sure, but looks like the same case for K12 and K16. Check out the pictures of the bottom of the case.

Finally, check out post #14 on this link (http://www.k1600forum.com/forum/bmw-...topcase-2.html) to another site, it says a guy mounted the topcase from his RT (which is identical to the GT rack/topcase) to a K16.

Seems like the dealer may not be correct and you CAN DO IT.

Good Luck with that.

The 49 Litre and 28 Litre BMW top cases will fit on the K12/13GT, R12RT, and K16GT/GTL.

In fact, the Luggage Grid is the same part on the R12RT and K16GT. The GTL Luggage Grid has the same mount, but is 2" longer. All of these have the same trunk mount pattern as the K12/13GT.

The GTL trunk adds Central Locking (on the K16 bikes) and an optional LED brake light.

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Thanks Ken. Now I'll be prepared when I go in with my top case next time and ask the same question.

lhendrick.....I thought I stated it was a BMW top case...size would not matter for the mounting system question.

One more question.

What year did BMW introduce the case mounting system we use now?

Mine is a '06 and I know RTs were using it before that.

Just more ammunition against a ill informed salesman.

Just take your top case inside, don't say anything, and just put it on their demo GT.

Then call the sales guy over . . .

The R12RT came out in 2005, using the exact same luggage grid and handles as the K16GT uses now.

One assumes that the new '14 RT-LC also uses the same (or similar) luggage mounting.

I was going to go in and ask if he remembered me and ask the question again. Then bring my top case in.

I knew he was a moron when he gave me the wrong answer to begin with. I just needed to confirm it.
