Sudden Change - Rough Running at Start

I rode my 2007 K1200GT on Thursday and it was a smooth as glass.

On Friday morning, I went to start it up, and it had a hard time turning over. Eventually it started, but it ran loud and rough. There was considerable shaking at low RPM, still present if I revved the engine slightly, but much reduced. I drove the car that day.

This morning, the bike starts and runs, but still does not sound or feel right.

The bike did this once before, months ago, and the problem went away on its own, not coming back until today.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Something definitely is not right.

Hmm, no codes? have a gs911? I have one, stop by... lol
If no codes then same as basswood, water in gas. add heet.
but not sure that accounts for your description of symptoms.
maybe cam chain stretch and and tensioner not pushing shoe out.
sloppy chain means cam and crank are not in synch.

I would think that if the cam chain were loose enough to cause such poor running then it certainly would also be audible.

Well xmagna did say it "ran loud."

So xmagna, when you say loud do you think you were hearing chain slap?

When I've heard that it was random and in the case of my GT goes away within a couple
beats as the tensioner gets pressurized and pushes the shoe back out.
I assume you have the updated tensioner and chain guard, (it was an easy install with all
the forum help.)

what else can cause that symptom. valves out of adjustment? timing off?

The first thing you should do is reset the throttle position. Turn key on,-let bike go through its "checks", Twist throttle open all the way and let it snap shut about 4 times. Fire the bike up and see if there's any difference.

Thanks for all the great replies and suggestions. I am away on travel for the next few days, but when I return I will:

1. Add some Techron to the tank.
2. Get out the GS-911 and see what it says.
3. Listen more carefully to see if I hear chain slap near the cam chain.
(Now why didn't I think of those things? Answer: Too much other stress in my life.)

My primary concern is whether running the engine could damage it. Something very much like this happened once before, and it cleared itself up quickly. Other than my concern about damaging the engine, I would run it a little more (and gently ride it around the neighborhood) to see if it clears up on its own.

My current hypotheses are:

a. Cam chain tensioner reservoir is not filling for some reason. Maybe it needs another chance to get back to normal operation?
b. One of the spark plugs is not getting spark.
c. Bad gas. I filled the tank recently. Premium fuel, but it was at Costco.
d. Valve too far out of adjustment (not likely) but it needs a valve check.

As I said, it runs rough and doesn't sound right. I will try to be more descriptive when I get back and run those tests.

Any comments about the likelihood of doing harm to the engine?

Follow-up: I added Techron to the tank, and the problem seems to have cleared itself up. Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions.

Glad to hear the symptom has left. Hopefully it was just bad gas. FYI, I don't know if Techron
will address water in the gas, I use the red HEET for that. It really works especially if a
fuel line is froze, I suppose that is not a problem for your climate.
