Shifty not returning to centre for next shift

Will it require opening up the tranny if the shifter is not springing back to centre after shifting.
I had to manually move it back before each gear change yesterday.
I have an appointment to have it looked at next month. I am now out of town but curious how common this is... AKA how expensive this will be?

First make sure nothing has come loose on the exterior shifting linkage. I have had my HP Rearset linkage get loose a number of times. But then, I don't overtighten fasteners. If everything is in order there and you can see it's the end of the shaft coming out of the Transmission that is not relocating to center, then you know the problem is inside and yes, you will have to get in there. It's a spring loaded ratchet system with a number of moving parts. Get on this right away because if it screws up bad enough, it could fall into two gears at once and you will then scatter your trans all over the streel; Very spendy $$$.
