'08 K1200GT restoration attempt

Hello all

New here. By accident became owner of '08 K1200GT.

Bike was in good condition, before car hit her while she was parked. Insurance company decided it is unrecoverable on reasonable costs, so owner got a compensation. Bike was planned to be sold for parts, and i took it all to play with it.

I will have to do full strip to make frame repair, and hope to have some assistance on this forum for various issues.

Known damages:

1. Smashed exhaust muffler - it got the main impact from the car

2. Bent support of the muffler

3. Scratched side and nose plastic

4. Broken glass of the headlight

5. Misaligned nose plastic/headlight, due to broken right front panel carrier

6. Broken part of frame, where side stand is secured (with gear lever).

7. Fault code for engine - activated fuse. The reason is obvious - oxy sensor hit the frame, damaged wiring created short circuit. Disconnected - problem cleared.

8. Fault codes for electronics - open circuits for front turn lights (actually not working, read ones are operational), horn malfunction open circuit (actually operational, and horn is not original so it is probably not connected to the damages), heated seat open circuit.
Checked wiring harness visually, no obvious damages detected. Need wiring diagram for further troubleshooting, trying to obtain CD SLP 2.2 (ordered, but not in stock).


To test bike, fabricated from metal scrap temporary "frame" to hold side stand and gear selector. Running well, handling on slow speed good. But when on center stand running in gear, some strange vibrations appear periodically in the drive train. Opened rear drive, removed drive shaft - no visible damages found.

Such misleading indication of ABS here - as you know, it says "brakes failure" - and with this alarm they offer you to start ride. :-)
As understood, it is normal behavior (warnings go off soon after start rolling).

But i am also confused from the sound coming from ABS unit - it says something like "tick tick tick..." as soon as ignition on. Is it normal?

I get the same sound when ignition is switched off. Are you sure that is a 2009? K1200GT's were only made made from 2006-2008. Your side panels are the same as the ones on a 2006-2008 model. Also, don't run in gear on the center stand. The noise you hear will be the drive train lash.

As soon as i turn key, it starts its clicking, and together with that annoying ABS indicator (brakes failure) though may be something misaligned after impact - was reading in some threads here about brushes problem.... However, have no error codes related to ABS.

As for year, in papers the production date stated as 2 January 2009, and the first registration is on 27/03/2009.
May be it is the last piece produced since assembly began somewhen in December 2008?

When you turn the bike on and off there is a sound, like a motor running and clicking (fuel pump). The ABS light is on because the bike needs to go at least 10 mph for the sensor to pick up movement. If it stays on longer than that, the sensor ring on the left side of the rim may be damaged. If you look at the readout that you posted, it shows as a K1200GT. K1300GT's from 2009-2010 have side vents.

sorry, i am lost somewhere... I did not mention K1300GT, as i have k1200GT.

as for sound, i refer to sound from ABS, not fuel pump. Continuously, as long as key is ON

You mentioned 2009 K1200GT. Wrong model year for your bike. Are you saying the ABS continues to run even after starting and riding? ABS pump may have been damaged from impact (I'm guessing since it was struck on the muffler side and it cracked the frame at the shifter). Send an email to Module Master ([email protected] - (888) 892-0764) and tell them the ABS issue. They are pretty helpful and may lead you in the right direction.

Just a thought, your bike was hit on the muffler side (same location as rear brake pedal). Do you think the switch for the brake pedal is damaged and causing the ABS pump to engage? On my 05 1200RT that had the "whizzy" brakes, if you engaged the brakes the ABS pump would run continuously.

Since the year 2009 is confusing and looks incorrect, i corrected the thread name. From where i took 2009 reference - i already informed earlier, it is production date.

I cannot hear that little sound when engine is started and during riding. The engine is much louder.
But warning light disappears shortly after i start movement.

Will appreciate if somebody test their K12GT - just turn the key and listen at left front side, if there is any sound is coming. I will try to record it and upload for reference.

There are no visible damages to ABS module and piping/wiring, the plastic also intact at that place. The frame piece was broken because bike was on side stand and after hit to right side it was pushed for about two meters to the left side, and side stand was stronger than that piece of frame (quite strange design anyway).

The bike was parked under CCTV camera, and i saw the record before decided to take this challenge.
