Angry 2006 GT Clutch/Gearbox Vibration/Noise

When I let the clutch slide under little load in first gear (e.g., negotiating obstacles at 1-2 mph in a level parking lot, or doing stop-and-go in traffic), I get extreme vibrations in the clutch/transmission until I either disengage or fully engage the clutch. The noise emitted from this vibration is identical to the familiar single gearbox shifting clunk, except that it occurs at a rate of 2-3 per second. Sometimes, I get the same noise/vibration when I shift down and let the clutch slide for braking from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd gear. It is not consistent, but I believe that it is getting worse. Even when I dont get the transmission noise, the clutch does not engage smoothly. There is always some vibration in the clutch, as if it is unbalanced.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Yep.
Mine does the exact same thing.
I ignore it, it seems to work fine?

Clutch vibes

No noise that I have noticed, but I definitely have vibration if I let the clutch out slowly, as in taking off from a stoplight. I try not to let it bother me.

It's under warranty, so make them figure it out. Sounds like a problem to me.

Red face Clutch Chatter

I brought the bike to the dealer yesterday. Apparently, there was a service bulletin regarding clutch chatter. The early GTs have a clutch with a spring that was not strong enough. BMW has modified the clutch with a bigger spring for newer GTs and they have started to replace the old ones, if the customer complains about the chatter. Mine will be done next week. I'll let you know if that solves the issue. I'll also get the new software uploaded. I hope to have the "perfect bike" when I am through with this.

Great! Glad you made them do the right thing. Had anyone seen this service bulletin/was it posted?

Smile Clutch Chatter

Just for the folks with very early 2006 GTs: if you have clutch chatter or extreme backslash from the drive train, it is the clutch. The first clutches had a weak spring. Had mine replaced under warranty. Chatter is gone, clunk is reduced, backslash less pronounced.

This stuff just torques me off. I'm Director of Product Management for company that manufactures small engines for lawn & garden equipment and if I ever found out that any of my guys knew of a serial defect and didn't send out a notice to all of the customers affected by it I fire somebody!!!!!!

Ok, I'm better now. Does anybody know if BMW is releasing a letter to owner's that need the clutch spring upgrade?
