Exclamation New 'W'-rated tires

I thought this information deserved it's own thread, my apologies for being redundant.

I have recently discovered that there is a new (to me anyway) speed rating on tires specified as a "W". So if you see a tire with the size 180/55WR17, that's an even better tire. The 'W'-rated tires are rated for even higher speeds than the 'Z'-rated tires. This may be old information, but it was new to me.

OK, I gotta ask, how do they assign the letters?

Z is for Zoom and W stands for WTF
