Oil and Final drive change...

I did the first service on my '07 GT. Everything went pretty smooth, a little time consuming just because of the first time.

I only have one question. I put in about 3.60-3.75 quarts in, I see oil on the dipstick but now I only get the "---" in the oil display. Is there some magical way to check the oil?

I read somewhere about plugging the oil line with an ear plug and snaking it out. I just rolled up an ear plug, stuffed it into line snaked it out, pulled the plug and all went well.

That's all for now, heading do the dealer tomorrow to see if they can throw it on the computer.

Matt, how long did you let the engine run after the oil change? I don't have right in front of me but I remember something in the Owner's Manual that it may take a while for the computer to register the oil level. I was waiting for the level indicator one morning and it won't budge from the "I'm Thinking" indicator until after I rode it a few blocks. When I came to a stop I got the check mark. The system is definitely finicky!

Yeah I let it wait a little while. Also went for a ride after everything was back together. Still no check mark.

On another note, as the final drive is supposed to be "lifetime fill" and now we require service at the 600 miles. I was told it is now no longer needed. I did not have any metal particles on the the drain plug. I did however have a decent amount of shavings on the engine oil drain plug. What are other experiences with this?

Had the final drive oil changed yesterday at 2950 miles (BMW had not yet sent out the service bulletin to do it at the 600 mile check when I had that done 6 weeksago). The oil certainly looked well used, more than what I thought oil planning to spend a "lifetime" in the final drive would look like at less than 3000 miles, but no metal particulate on the magnet. No obvious symptoms from the drive or final drive.
