Question Help with Paint Code for Deep Metallic Blue

Can anyone out there help me with the paint code for the 2006 K1200GT? While the factory and shipping papers and the BMW computer both indicate 997 as the paint code for my VIN, the local BMW collision shop painted my new top case with that recipe and the colour is not even close! 997 is a basic blue and it does not even has a metallic flake in it. Now they have to re-shoot it and we are going to be guessing at the proper colour to use.

I read a few posts about paint shops working hard to match the existing paint job but no one seem to have been able to resolve the mystery of why the bike code of 997 does not correspond to the metallic deep blue of the faster bikes

So is there someone out there who has solved the mystery? Does 997 in German translate to something else in NA?

Come on BMW owners out there, we have solved harder riddles than this latest BMW corporate computer snafu!

The painter that my dealership uses hit the nail right on the head. My topbox matches perfectly. I can call them tomorrow if you'd like.

I would appreciate it if you would and the community at large may benefit as well since everyone seems to have the same trouble.

I'll call them today, but I have a feeling they're just going to tell me "997". I can't find any conflicting information to make me think otherwise.

You could take off the front seat and see a sticker on the plastic in front of your b..lls.
That is the color.

Take care!

As I understand it, at least from those here in California, BMW does not import the factory paint. All paint jobs are custom "matches" to the stock paint. Something about BMW not wanting to deal with the EPA BS for the volume needed. Could be wrong, but that's the story I got.

I know the BMW literature says, "Deep Blue Metallic - 997," but when I picked up some touch-up paint back east last year, the "official" color was "Dark Blue - 991." I don't know what the discrepancy is, but it is a perfect match. Unfortunately for us here in California we are not allowed to buy touch-up paint. Apparently people eat it out here or something. I currently need some paint for my Harley and have to pick it up next time I am in Boston.

I also had my top case painted but the shop matched a damaged side case lid that was damaged in shipping. The bike looks great, much like Joe's in the photo.

Good luck finding the paint and post some photos once the top case is repainted.

The paint code printed on the bike's label refers to a color scheme, which includes the main paint color and any secondary or trim colors. So it's not usually a direct correlation to the main panel colors, and finding the translation codes isn't always easy.

I found the right colour code, or rather my BMW dealer did. It almost looks like someone made a typo in the factory. The code is 971 and it is an absolute perfect match much as the one on the picture shown in this thread. Thanks to all.
