ECU question

This will mostly be for folks who have watched their dealers update (or happen to know this).

Is the ECU updated by actually plugging directly into the ECU (removing the harness on the bike first) or is there a quick port (ala OBDII port) someplace on the bike?

I'm wondering if our ECUs can be updated without actually having the bike present - in other words, if you just happen to have a dealer who won't do it (or says they did it but actually did not which is almost impossible to prove when they won't give you a printout or let you watch) it would be nice to just pack up the ECU, find an update friendly dealer and send it off with some money for the favor.

Or, dare I even think it, spend the money and buy a new ECU (new and current would be the assumption but then you have the problem of not having the VIN in there me thinks).

There's a port under the seat that plugs into the BMW's computer GT1

I guess you could send in the computer. But the person updating the program would have to have an engine harness on a donor bike with the same specs as your bike, I guess.

Someone on the other forum bought or is buying a new ecu for this very purpose.

I also found a place that does ECU tuning - I imagine that they would use the latest update(s) from BMW as their base maps for their custom tunes. A bit pricey, but added benefit of a few more ponies.

Thanks for the picture - that helps a lot!

yep, same place previously discussed. I like the idea, but only if the cost were less than half, say around $300, I'd be semi-interested. Doubt they would do that even for a group purchase.

I emailed them tonight to see if they even do K1200GT tunes - I'll report back when they respond.
