Question Voltage Regulator

Hi All,

I rode home from work last night and I noticed again that the headlight gets brighter when I downshift and bring up the revs while exiting the freeway. Is there still a voltage regulator on the CanBus system?

I know this bike has a higher capacity alternator and it should handle the load just fine. I am completely stock as far as electrics go. I always get the red light and battery indicator at startup and have since new, no matter how many miles I put in.

Perhaps your battery is in a low state of charge? Alternators work best when they are over 2-3K rpm on the tacho. If you've got loads of heated stuff and auxiliary lights on and the battery is a bit low or on its way out, you can expect some change in lamp brightness from high to low rpm.

With all the electrics running, measure the voltage on the battery as you raise rpm on the stand. You should be seeing about 14.2 volts constant, but as the rpm drops to idle this might drop back to just over 12 volts and is the rpm at which the alternator cannot match your electric load.
