New to Beemers... a few questions.

Hi. I'm new to this forum as well as the bikes. I have narrowed my choice down to the K12GT. My question is should I take the plunge and buy new or buy one a few years old. No older than say an '04. Is there any significant improvements that have come about between now and then? I live 4 hrs. away from the nearest dealer. Is that a problem? Thanks for the advice in advance.

Hi Brad,

First and foremost: congrats on your choice, but then which one?

There are in fact 2 K12GTs around: one that was born in 2003 and one in 2006.

Totally different machines! The older one is 130 hp, very heavy (I owned his brother, the K12RS) but can be had for a decent price. The newer is 152 hp, very slick, not that heavy, and according to me the better of the 2. But cannot be had 4 years old. And will cost you significantly more! Both are 4 cilinders, but the engines are totally different too. The old one has the engine in line with the motorcycle, the new one has the engine frontal to the road, like most Japanese 4 cilinders.

I wonder how you based your choice on the K12GT, since there are 2 machines around?

My definite suggestion: go for the newer one, the second generation!

BTW: this forum is centered around the new K12GT, not the old one.

Thanks for the reply. Thats the type of info I am looking for. The styles look very similar between the old and new generation so I had no idea of the difference. Has there been enough "gremlins" with the new generation GT's to be hesitant to buy being 4 hrs. from the dealer?

You should do more research and find out about the two bikes. There is heaps of info on the older K1200RS / GT on the web, including a lot about problems with oil seal leakage leading to major work to replace the clutch. Also problems with clutch spline shafts on the single plate dry clutch that put me off the older bike.

Despite my fears about the above I nearly bought one as they are great to ride and much cheaper than the 2006+ GT. However, I decided I would wait until I could get a cheaper new generation GT with a conventional wet clutch, easily accessible like Japanese bikes, and hence no problems with oil leaks causing clutch damage.

In February a 4 month old GT came up and I snapped it up. It is everything I hoped for and out of the big ST's such as Honda ST1300 and Yamaha FJR1300, the only one that has most of the good characteristics of the Kawasaki GTR 1000 that I found extremely practical for my commuting and touring purposes.

As you will read in many places on this forum the engine power and suspension (completely different front suspension from other bikes that you can research on the web) is brilliant and addictive. Also both the older servo brakes and the newer non servo brakes are excellent, thankfully nothing like the brakes on the 1986 Kawasaki, not one of its strong points.

Whatever your choice, enjoy the bike. You will love it like everyone on this forum, even if magazine testers seem to miss the point and not get what it is all about.
