EWS system failure

So I stopped to wash down the pavement on one of my favourite section of twisties and when I lept back in the saddle and fired up (almost) the Computer said" Check.....EWS", so I did. Nothing happened. Followed the owners manual precisely (Remove all keys from ring, use reserve key, etc. etc.). Still nothing. Called Road services, very promptly dispatched a deck truck to return me and ole Betsy (07 K12GT, 8 weeks, 7500km) the remaining 2 hours home. Being after hours on Saturday of course she will sit in the towing compound till BMW authourizes a further 400kmh tow to the nearest dealer on Monday. Alll systems were normal on shutdown (temp, etc.). Anyone else experience this poorly timed situation with the EWS? Thanks, Glenn.

IIRC there was a service bulletin on this topic. Something to do with the wiring at the base of the ignition switch. I'm sure there is someone who has more specific information that will fill you in.

EWS = Elektronische WegfahrSperre, the Electronic Immobilizer. It is controlled by a transponder in the key. There has been a recall for the antenna ring of the immobilizer in the ignition lock. Up to a certain date the antenna ring was mounted in such way that the harness could have gotten stuck, resulting in a broken cable. Since your bike is only 8 wks old, I doubt that this is the problem, though.

Grtz,
Erwin

This happened to me once a few weeks ago. J-Low was in the garage and the key was in the ign-not the on position. She's an '06 and had the recall done on the ign harness. Went to start and the EWS warning came on. Pulled out the key and reinserted-no EWS light and off I went. Only time this happened. Key in ign too long w/o starting it? These Germans are very strict--"You Vill Start Da Motorcycle If You Put Da Key In".

Same thing happened to me yesterday.

I had been parked up for about 6 hours on the side stand and when I tried to start I got the EWS error message. After many times taking the keys out and cycling the ignition.... still nothing, just the EWS warning.

Got fed up and thought I would have to call BMW rescue so I put the bike on the centre stand. It still got the error message until I put the side stand up and everything was fine. No the bike was not in gear at any time and I was puzzled but pleased to be able to ride home.

Next time it is in the dealers I will get them to have a look for errors in the computer log.

Is there some way to bypass this thing. I'm going to be real po if I'm out in the dessert and this thing acts up.

Update

Gary at Southwest Motorrad and his trusty diagnostic computer have discovered the EWS module is faulty. Parts on order and a loaner in the driveway. Excellent treatment all-round. Glenn.

Something similar happened to my wife's '07 R1200RT. We'd been riding, and stopped for a moment. When she went to restart, she got "EWS", and no attempt to start.

A call to our dealer resulted in instructions from the service manager to wait ten minutes, and then attempt to restart it. If it started, we were to ride it in. If not, call for a tow truck. Amazingly enough, it started right up, so she rode direct to the dealer. We had to wait several days for a part to be shipped from Europe. We didn't have to walk, but my wife was NOT impressed. Nor, did she get a loaner. She was so pissed that she rode her '06 GT to the Honda dealer the next day, and traded it off for an '07 Goldwing. Other than bring it home, she hasn't ridden her RT since.

The EWS fault has reappeared on my bike. Yesterday it refused to start and had to be recovered to the dealer.

No surprise from the dealer, it appears to be a known fault with new bikes like the K1200S, K1200R and R1200RT. There is a problem with the antenna loop which goes around the keyhole. This is being replaced under warranty.

Pain in the neck as this is the best weekend of the year so far weather wise, sunny and 24ºC (about 76ºF).

Still, I am glad it happened now before my run to France in a couple of weeks time.

By the way, my bike is one of the first batch of 2006 models.

There is a recall on this particular problem. Every GT2 needs to have this recall done at no charge. There 3 recalls at the moment:
1> oil fill cap to be replaced
2>EWS checked and replaced if necessary
3>centerstand to be checked and parts replaced if necessary.

My bike was in for the oil cap recall, and the other 2 items were checked and noted in the service record.

EVERY owner should look into this ASAP if not sooner, especially for the EWS or you may be stuck in a desert,SOL !
