Can I shorten the Garmin GPS power cable?

I would like to run my 12 volt accessory cable to get power but, the cable is very long and there is a "bulb" or whatever just before the 12 volt plug. I would like to shorten the cable and splice it direct to my power source, but do I need this "bulb/bulge"? Is is a resistor or what? Maybe a fliter capacitor???

I didn't know what it was, and didn't want to experiment on relocating it...so there's a coil of wire behind the dash. Probably a ferrite core to reduce noise in the power lead, but that's a WAG.

In the abesnce of a definite answer from anyone including a Garmin dealer, I will probably just coil up the balance of the wire similar to your solution. Thanks
