Question Do MP3's lose stuff?

A few weeks ago, I downloaded some songs to my wife's MP3. Yesterday she brought it to me and asked me to find those songs, but they are GONE! I checked all directories and can't find the playlist anywhere. I then checked the MP3 I use on my bike and found I had lost some of the music on it also. Neither MP3 has been used much during the last two weeks, so I changed out the batteries, but that was after I lost the music files. Anybody else had this happen?

I've never heard that before. I do know that there are some music services that have specially encrytped files that will "expire" after a certain time -- meaning that the encryption key expires and unless you renew it, the file stays encrypted. They shouldn't just disappear.

I just discovered that the box we store our MP3s in when they are not being used has a magnetic latch. Don't know if that's the problem, but a magnet can screw up a credit card, cassette tape, etc.

Lost Songs

When I first got my IPod I had my ripper set to rip to a type of compression other than MP3 and so the songs were not on the play list but in a folder called files or some such.

You can "loose" songs if you perform a synch. and uncheck some of the songs in the preferences. Not really lost just not set to be added to the iPod.
