X = 20

Ocelot has BMW panniers. These bags have vinyl piano hinges underneath. They come in two sections for each pannier. Each hinge slides onto a pair of rails molded on the bottom. Now, obviously, a vinyl piano hinge is only going to last X many years before the vinyl gets old and stiff & the whole hinge cracks through. Then you pop your latches and the lid falls off.

Yesterday, Shade Tree Labs determined conclusively that the value of X is 20.

I slid the two hinges off in four pieces, called my dealer to add two pairs of new hinges to my rolling order, and now I am looking at my options. What can I do until new ones come in? Anyone figured out a slick temporary fix for hinges after X?

can't do without

Went to the garage, hunted up a scrap of chrome plated piano hinge and a handful of #6 x 1/2" flat head machine screws, and after an hour and a half of Aethiopian Engineering, I have a working pannier again. Can't do without. Gotta have a place to stuff my duffle on the way to the gym. If you can't be good with money, it helps to be good with your hands.

My X was much less probably due to abuse and misuse. Made this mod many years ago...

Dontcha hate spending more for S&H than the part cost? Makes me find alternatives just on principle!
