Unhappy '91 K75 with Roar and power loss


I need help with a recent problem. At 25 miles the bike acted like it was running out of gas. Twisting the throttle made it pop and jump. I returned home at 35 mph in 5th gear
at 3,000 rpms. There was no smoke, no lights on the dash, or fluid leaks to indicate trouble. After a nights sleep, it ran fine again until about 25 miles and the problems came
back this time with a loud howl like a dying dog. No dog was found under my bike.

First thing I'd do is replace the fuel filter. Napa 3032.

If that doesn't work then try some Alpo.

Thanks for your input Psycotic Waterfowl, as usual you have good advice. Not sure about
the Alpo though. This all started after filling the tank with fresh fuel.

Maybe not so fresh fuel....just Google that a bit, you'll easily find reports of ethanol content way up there, as in well over 20%.

Dump that fuel, if there is any water in there, attracted by the corn juice of course, that may damage your fuel filter. Maybe already has....! But you'll change it anyway.
Water and filtering media, not always a good combination.

I shall guess that since BMW may use paper in their fuel filters and lots of it when I took one apart. Good gas is fine, but water can cause the fibres in the filter medium to expand effectively closing off the fuel supply or at worst blowing up the fuel pump or filter if it over pressures.

You guys seem have bad experiences with your gas and bio fuels. Don't you have any standards for gas served at the pump and people who go around checking them? Years ago we used to have lots of small gas stations here and whilst the gas going into the tanks was ok, the tanks were often dirty or contained water so what came out could be bad. I'm guessing your out of town gas stations may be worse than in the cities.

We have standard unleaded 95 Octane (RON), 97 if you pay more. But I see there are now some stations offering 'Green' 99 Octane Bio ethanol mix. Now you might assume the 99 Octane would be the best, but I haven't compared mpg which might tell a different story.

Now we have the cheapest gas at our Walmart type stores which has pushed out the little stations. But at least their turnover is huge and the gas delivered is turned over after only a few days.

Canadian gas is pretty good, but for a few retailers we have managed to stay away from the corn juice. The Canadian West only has a couple refineries, all the gas is from them, however some retailers do specify extra additives to "make it better". All the same price anyway so I usually stick with the better brands.

Travelling the US, different story ,sometimes when the light is on and you are in the boonies somewhere, can't be too picky.

Anyway, slightly overdue...Ooops...BMW fuel filter and I was surprised at how much crap was in it, pretty well half US and half Canadian gas.Not the first BMW filter I take apart, certainly the dirtiest.



But I just stuck some of the media in water, after a couple hours could not even blow through it, as opposed to the dirty dry media, albeit difficult, I can at least get some air through. But the complete filter before I cut it up, easily passed air so maybe not so overdue after all.

Little test does not prove anything really, but considering how much of a PITA it is to change that filter on the newer Ks, I think I'll stick with OEMs, not that I have anything against Napas, I have used them before. But considering the poor quality of some gasolines, I can only say stick with good quality filters and...change them often!

I guess I could also buy a Napa and cut it open, for less than $10.00, that would amuse me for half an hour or so, and very possibly save me some money down the road if I find them acceptable. BMW filter prices are.....^%$##%^*(( !!!!

Oh.....gas pumps not too far from here! I think they may be the last in the West,never had a problem with their gas, NO Corn Juice...

I'm going to swap a Napa one out of my K1100RS sometime in the near future. I do it annually since they're so cheap. I'll try to remember to cut it up and take some pics.

Smile Problem solved


When I took the filter out, I found a coating of black in the tank and badly deteriorated hose.
Someone used the wrong type hose and it was coming apart and being sucked up by the
filter. I had a BMW filter in at the time, but now I will have a NAPA filter and submersible
hose.
