K-100 Starter Not Engaging

My recently quit engaging and turning the engine over. So after checking several forums on the subject, a defective one way bearing seemed to be the problem. The dealer wanted $1500.00 Labor to work on it. So I took it apart, the bearing was the problem, BUT it was only gummed up with a tan milky goo. The Cause: A short commute thru the fall and winter. The motor never warmed up enough to burn off any moisture in the system, resulting with the goo in the starter unit. A quick swoosh in solvent and all was better. Knowing then what I know now, A good engine flush and oil change along with Warming up the engine to operating temp before riding would have saved a whole lot of work on my part. I wish someone would have suggested the flush as a fix, so I'm throwing it out now.

This has happened to me twice. A temporary "fix" will allow you to start the bike.

Engine off. Put in 2nd gear. Roll bike backwards quickly. (While seated for stability. A slight downhill helps considerably.) Pop the clutch to stop the bike. Listen to hear the starter turning backwards while popping clutch. It's a distinctive whirring sound. It might take a couple of attempts before the bike will start normally.

I think this forces the sprags into the outer ring and will wipe the crud out of the way temporarily. You can usually get several normal starts after doing this. My K100 engine started doing this while I was preparing the K11 engine for installation. This kept me riding until I could do an engine swap.

K bikes are prone to fouling the plugs if left idling so it's not a good idea to warm up the bike before riding off.

From the owner's manual:

Quote:
Do not warm up the engine at idling speed. Move off immediately after starting.
