K75 Turn Signal Gremlins

Hey gang, I've got a perplexing issue on my hands. I'm in the middle of cafe style build on a 92 K75. After stripping the bike down I've replaced the rear brake light and turn signals, front signals, headlight, and instrument cluster (with an acewell). While it was no easy task I had gotten everything working. I tested after adding each component and confirmed that everything was working.

Finally, after reassembling everything I was doing a final set of tests before putting the tank back on and I ran into some trouble. Everything came on ok, then, when I went to test the turn signal I heard a single click and no signal. After poking around I found a broken fuse and swapped it out. Turned it on again, went to test the signal and it blew the fuse again.

I then noticed that the backlight on the Acewell cluster is coming in and out and the unit looks like it is resetting. This is happening pretty rapidly. It also seem to be indicating that the hazards are on, but I can't really trust that.

I've tried unplugging each item from the lights to see if one is shorting out but the issue persists.

I know I'm in no man's land since I've introduced a bunch of aftermarket parts, but I'm wondering if the symptoms might be an indication of a known issue. Flasher relay? Bulb monitor relay?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Follow up

I took the bike for a ride this morning. Starts and runs fine. Headlight and taillight working fine. Gauge cluster seems to be constantly resetting and/or showing hazards as on. Things that were previously working like the tack are no longer working. The high beam indicator does still work. The higher I reved the less it seem to reset. Didn't try the turn signals again as I am running low on fuses.

Cleaned off the ground connection up front. Plan to test later with multimeter.

Wondering if I have a short, or if this is the result of the flasher relay or bulb monitor dying. I have both units on order but don't want to fry another if it is something outside of that.

So confusing as seemingly nothing changed between installing as testing the components and then reassembly.

Any and all ideas welcome.

Hi!

If it was fuse #3 that did blow, I would suspect that you have a short in the flasher relay output circuit(s).
Have you tried the flasher in both directions?

You mention that the hazard warning shows, how did you connect that wire...it's not any output for this warning function on the relay.

Which model of Acewell do you got?

update / progress

Well it seems the problem may be much more straight forward.

I tore back down the wiring to the acewell and found a couple loose connections. After tightening everything back up it seems to be behaving properly and not indicating any strange hazards or blinking the backlight.

Still, the turn signals seem to be out of commission. I tested the controls and again they blew fuse 3. I had tested both the front and back sets together before with no problem. I can't remember whether I tested them with the headlight installed though - any chance that would make a difference?

Anyway, as mentioned before I have a new flasher and bulb monitor on order and would rather not reck them if there is something wrong with my set up. Looking at Snowbum's site he suggests that the flasher unit is rather load sensitive.

I would suggest that you remove the flasher relay and the bulbs from all four direction indicators (if bulbs is used and not LEDs).
Then measure for short to ground in both left and right circuit.

About your concern regarding the BMU in the early posts....no need, the BMU isn't connected to the flasher circuit.......
it only controls the the brake light switches, tail and brakelight bulbs.
