85 K100 Oil in coolant

I am getting oil in the coolant. What is the most likely cause? The only guess I have, and it is a blind guess, is the seals in the oil/water pump.

There is a cavity for drainage between the oil and coolant seals in the oil/coolant pump, so cross mixing there seems unlikely to me. You will usually see drops or oil or coolant on the floor beneath the front of the engine when you have one of those seals fail. The next place possible is the head gasket- has it seriously overheated? Oil in the coolant shows as milky brown, maybe even separated oil sitting on top of the coolant.

I was told that there shouldn't be oil in the coolant a few years ago because of the drain hole. But then way before the internet that is how I diagnosed my bad seal in the oil/water pump. Oily scum in the overflow tank and some in the rad.

What year is that bike again? The early ones were pretty well all going defective from corrosion pitting the shaft. I think BMW is up to version 3.0 on the shafts.

Now and then it also happen that this weep hole is blocked with old road debris,

It is an 85.

No doubt about oil in coolant. There is a brownish sludge throughout the cooling system-overflow, hoses, and radiator. The oil seems clean; no coolant in the oil. There is no dripping from the hole. Those who know from past experience tell me it probably is a failure of one of the seals in the pump. The weep hole is probably blocked with crud.

My plan is to remove the pump and let the mechanic at the dealer rebuild it. Reading the IBMWR tech posts, it seems that the success rate for rebuilding by the inexperienced is low enough to justify the $80 in labor. With luck, the shaft is fine. That is the big money item.

Unfortunately, the dealer is swamped. No repair until early July. I plan to keep riding it unless it becomes a serious problem. I drained and cleaned the system. I plan to siphon out the floating scum from the overflow. We will see how it goes. I hope not to kill it, but if I do that will allow me to replace it with a newer machine...maybe a used Tiger 1050.

If you do a quick search on water pump seal you should find my experience and I've submitted an addendum to the procedure to the IBMWR. It's not difficult but procedures must be followed carefully to avoid damaging the new ceramic slip ring seal and using the updated spacer bushing (my issue).

If you've found a place that will do it for $80, that sounds like an hour of labor. Are they replacing the whole pump?

The shop is replacing the three seals-water, oil and oil gear. There is a fourth shown in the fiche. That may get replaced as well.

Another reason for the shop is that I am replacing the head gasket on a 96 Trident. My first time for that. There is more than enough for me to do there. I want to minimize the downtime on the 85 as it is the only mc I have running. If I had another, I would try to fix the pump myself. I have Diaz's summary and your addendum.

The drain hole is in the center front of the oil pan. Why not take a piece of coat hanger, nail, pick or something thin and stiff to try to unblock the hole (if it IS blocked). If there is enough oil to foul the water pump seal, it should come dripping out.
