k11 cooling fan problem

So, recently I removed the broken old temp guage. Planned to get around to installing new one. Noticed that I haven't heard the thermo fan for a while. Quick look at wiring diagram illustrates that fan is turned on by Mototronix unit, and receives input through the guage. So guess I need to install new guage, which requires 12v source. Or should I switch fan manually? What have others done? If I install new guage, where is the most convenient source for a 12v+ that is turned on by ignition? Should I pick it up off a coil? Any feedback appreciated. ta
